The Club gathered this weekend for the 2nd annual Rodger Brown Memorial Shoot. This round is a club special designed specifically in memory of Rodger. Using the club “Jelly” Bows, consisting of 72 arrows split over 50m & 30m, it is one of the rare occasions that every archer attending is in direct competition.
While Archery considers itself a sport of gentleman style behaviour, this round is anything but. The “Compliments” and mind games had begun long before any arrows were shot. In gusty conditions, 10 archers vied for glory. Dave Moore, the current holder of the trophy, started strongly and was smug about his position after a two dozen arrows, but his attention and mind games quickly turned-on junior archer Erin Hainge after he discovered she had opened up a comfortable lead at half way. At the other end of the spectrum, Rhys Moore (infamous for his abilities with a jelly bow), had managed to unexpectedly haul himself to mid-table by the half way mark, with Joy Gough happy to have scored a hit, and club barebow experts (and bookie favourites) Colin Moore and Stan Gorry propping up the table. Peter Mumford appeared to be adopting his usual Sunday mentality of just enjoying a relaxing morning.
At the 30m, the games changed with scores dramatically improving (for most). Ralf Mitchell and Peter Howland were giving each other quiet encouragement when they thought no one was watching but it wasn’t enough to catch the leaders. Charlotte George put in a valiant display with two different sets of arrows but the damage at 50m was done. With Dave Moore and Erin throwing abuse at each other across the range, thinking it was a purely two horse race, were shocked to discover Colin had come racing up the inside to snatch the trophy without anyone noticing.
