Ten archers turned up on Sunday to take part in the annual Club Championships. The Championships are based on a WA1440 round for the Recurve and Compounds, while Bare and Longbow trophies are decided on a single distance of 50m. The weather continued to be good but it was quite breezy, which presented some challenges to the archers.
The largest field of the day came in the Gents Recurve division where Tom Rogers, Richard Hainge, Matt Smith and Johnathan Gordon vied for the trophy. Given Jonathan’s form going into the tournament, it was no surprise to anyone that he won but he did so with style. Finishing 190 points ahead of his nearest rival, Johnathan claimed the Recurve title by breaking the Club Record which has stood since the 80’s. The fight was then on for the minor places where the margins were much smaller. Richard Hainge recorded 4 misses which handed the advantage to Tom Rogers, who managed to keep all but one of his arrows on target to secure second place from Richard. The less experienced Matt Smith had to settle for fourth.
Rhys Moore had the Gents Compound division all to himself and so took the Trophy unopposed with his usual panache.
The Ladies Recurve was a straight head-to-head between Emily O’Hara and Erin Hainge and proved to be closer than expected. Both archers had a number of misses which put a dent in their respective scores. Safe to say that Erin was not shooting at her usual level, while Emily upped her game a little. Erin managed to hold on to lift the trophy but Emily finished just 12 points behind and should be pleased with her efforts.
The Ladies Compound title went to Caitlin Gelder, who took the win unopposed.
Chloe Cubberley set a new club record to seize the Ladies Barebow trophy, while Stan Gorry secured the Gents title.
Stan switched disciplines in the afternoon session to defeat Peter Howland in the Gents Longbow division and take his second trophy of the day.
