The Club took advantage of the good weather to hold the York/Hereford Trophy shoot. This is a National round shot over yards, with five zone scoring – 9,7,5,3,1. The round is broken down into three distances 100/80/ 60 yards for the Gents York, and 80/60/50 yards for the Ladies Hereford, with 6 dozen arrows shot at the first distance, 4 dozen at the second and 2 dozen at the third. The first distance is the maximum an archer can expect to face in a Target competition. The turnout was low, which was a pity because there was some nice silverware up for grabs.
It was a straight head-to-head in the Gents Recurve between Jonathan Gordon and Richard Hainge. Richard did himself no favours by racking up 8 misses and effectively putting himself out of contention. Jonathan on the other hand was on fire. He had one miss, but this did not stop him from shattering the club record by a whopping 69 points to lift the trophy.
Westy Westmorland found himself unopposed in the Compound division, but the lack of competition did not dull his senses, and he shot a pb for the round as well as pocketing the trophy.
The Hereford Recurve was contested between Erin Hainge and Emily O’Hara. Emily did her best, as usual, but 80 yards was a big ask for her and she was swept away by Erin who not only grabbed the elegant silver trophy but also recorded a new club record into the bargain.
Unable to reach the 100 yards required of the York, relative newcomer Matt Smith elected to shoot a Bristol round. This is identical to the Hereford but gets rebranded when a man shoots it. Matt did himself proud by producing a new club record and will receive the cut-glass decanter that is the Bristol Trophy at the next prize giving in February.
It was obviously a day for records to fall as Lula Brown, shooting in the afternoon session, set one for the Metric 122-30.
Peter Howland stuck to his Longbow and took the win for the Metric 122-50 round unopposed.
