After some intensive training during the annual coaching weekend, the IoMAC archers were once more in competition mode. The round of the day was a Portsmouth Three Spot for adults and juniors alike, shot as part of the Club’s Scratch League.
It was a straight two horse race between Rhys Moore and Pete Mumford in the Gents Compound division. Rhys was shooting with his new bow competitively for the first time and seemed to have adjusted well to the change. He led from start to finish and put in his third highest score for the season. Pete Mumford shot consistently, as always, never straying outside the yellow at the centre of the target but he hit too many 9’s to be a threat.
Joy Gough had had the draw length of her bow altered during the coaching weekend and was still trying to get to grips with the change. Her score was a little down as a result but Joy was happy with the progress she made during the shoot.
The largest field of the day came in the Gents Recurve, with a total of seven archers in the mix. David Smith, Matt Elliott, Eric Lutes, Peter Howland, Greg Altham, Danny Cowin and Dave Berry were all in the hunt for glory. David Smith had a number of misses which lowered his score considerably and he finished some way off the pace in seventh place. Peter Howland started strongly but the occasional miss here and there ate into his total and put him in sixth. A much improved Eric Lutes put in some impressive ends but three errant shots saw him drop just short of the 500 point barrier. Matt Elliott, back after surgery to his shoulder, had a slow start thanks to a miss in his first dozen but gathered momentum as the shoot progressed. He twice closed to within 4 points of Greg Altham but Greg finished strongly to hold onto third place. Danny Cowin, who had missed the coaching weekend while he threw arrows of a different sort at a dartboard somewhere in deepest, darkest Lancashire, turned up looking even more dishevelled than usual and sadly lacking practice. These circumstances did nothing to slow him down however, as he added 47 points to his pb for the round and take the win quite easily into the bargain. Dave Berry added 4 points to his pb to secure second place.
Barbara Harris and Jane Berry took to the line in the Ladies recurve, with Harris taking the win and Jane breaking the 500 barrier at her first attempt at the round.
Lesley Sleight, silver medallist in Ladies Tradbow at the recent IFAA European Indoor Archery Championships in Hungary, shot a full face Portsmouth but was a little below her best.
In the Junior Gents Recurve Toby Young shot up a storm during the central part of the shoot putting in a perfect row of tens at one point on his way to an emphatic victory. If he had been slightly more awake when he started and not suffered a miss towards the end he would have been closer to his pb. James Hill shot well in second place and was delighted to add 10 points to his pb for the round.
In the Junior Ladies Tilly Ashton added 25 points to her pb for the round to take the win from little sister Lily Priestnal who was shooting the round for the first time.
