The New Year got off to a gentle start at Onchan on Sunday with a Three-spot Portsmouth round. Numbers were a little low with only twelve archers shooting, eleven of whom submitted scoresheets, the twelfth being so disappointed with his performance that he ‘filed’ his scoresheet in the nearest bin.
Rhys Moore continued his winning streak in the Gents Compound division finishing 18 points clear of his nearest rival Pete Mumford. Mr Mumford may have been a little distracted by the acquisition of a new barebow which he set up and shot throughout the afternoon to get it ready for use next week. Pete did however secure second place well ahead of John Angiolini in third.
Rose Sandilands got 2022 under way with an emphatic win over Joy Gough in the Ladies Compound division. Joy was out of action for several weeks with a shoulder injury which may have had an impact upon the result.
With Alex Allen-Snell enjoying ‘new dad’ status at home, Ralf Mitchell missing in action and Danny Cowin in retirement mode, it was left to Peter Howland and Bod Boland to carry the torch in the Gents Recurve. Bod put in his best performance so far but still had to settle for second place behind Peter who eclipsed him by almost 40 points. Both men had one miss.
With Pete Mumford getting his new hardware in tune, it was a straight head-to-head shootout between Chris Crompton and Stan Gorry in the Gents Barebow. Both men kept all their arrows on target and there was only 1 Gold difference between the two, but Chris Crompton’s shooting was generally more accurate, and he broke the 500 barrier to take the win by 28 points.
Brother and sister Nathan and Eloise Kinrade were the only juniors in action on Sunday. Nathan showed the adults how Recurve should be shot with an impressive display in the u18’s category. Eloise seemed to struggle a little but hopefully still enjoyed the shoot
