Club Report 23rd February 2020

Fourteen archers turned up over the course of the day, with some interesting results. The Juniors once again showed the Seniors the way home, with both u18’s setting personal best scores. The round of the day was a Portsmouth three-spot, though Ralf Mitchell, Chris Addy and Kristen Joughin opted for the single face. The round was shot as part of the Club’s Scratch League.

There was a new face on the line in the Gents Compound division, as Andy Westmorland went over to the Dark Side after competing just twice with the Recurve bow. Andy had only shot the bow once on a Club night and therefore didn’t have sight marks for the full distance. Dave Moore was on hand to advise and adjust where necessary and Andy proved to be a quick learner, breaking 500 at his first attempt. Colin Moore also shot Compound again and an improved score showed that he just needed a bit more practice that bow type. (Colin shoots four different bow styles, with four separate entries in the Club’s data base and four separate handicaps – just to give the Records Officer something to do). Rhys Moore just couldn’t seem to find any rhythm and the fight for the top spot fell to Dave Moore and Pete Mumford. Dave Moore was using his new bow for the first time – a blue Matthews, and found his arrows flying high. Unable to adjust the sights anymore, Dave had to aim off (effectively aiming at the bottom of the outer ring in order to put the arrow into the centre) which put him at a bit of a disadvantage. Pete Mumford led from start to finish but there was never more than 2 points in it, and he eventually claimed victory by a single point.

In the Ladies Compound Joy Gough put in another solid round and was happy with her morning’s work.

There were only three Gents in the Recurve division- Peter Howland, Ralf Mitchell and Chris Addy. Ralf Mitchell couldn’t find any consistency and ended up bottom of the heap. Chris Addy could not repeat his form of the previous week and had to settle for second place behind Peter Howland, who kept all bar one of his arrows on target to take the win.

In the Ladies Recurve, Kirsten Joughin added 10 points to her pb, beating boss partner Ralf Mitchell in the process. Barbara Harris returning from illness was just happy to have made it through the shoot.

Only two juniors turned up to shoot but both were in good form. James Hill added 2 points to the pb he set the previous week but had to settle for second place, as Toby Young added 10 points to his pb to take the win and post the highest Recurve score of the day.
Chris Crompton put in another terrific round and looks all set to defend his Barebow title at the upcoming Club Championships.
