The Indoor season resumed at Onchan after the Christmas break with a nice laidback Portsmouth round courtesy of the Records Officer who couldn’t be bothered to shoot anything else. One or two of the usual suspects were missing but it still a reasonable turn out.
The largest field of the day was in the Gents Compound division where three Club members were in competition. Or, rather, Rhys Moore was a foregone conclusion to win, and Cliff Graves and David Moore were in the competition to avoid the ignominy of last place. Unfortunately for Cliff, Dave Moore, while being injured was still Dave Moore and second was the worst he was willing to be.
Pete Mumford found himself up against Chris Crompton in the Gents Barebow and somewhat outclassed. Chris was one of only two non-compound archers to break 500 in the morning round and beat Pete by over 80 points to take the win.
Stan Gorry found himself shooting with Barbara Harris but neither of them had any direct competition. Stan never quite hit his stride and had a poor fourth dozen but recovered to finish strongly. Harris looked as though she could have done with another couple of weeks in bed, but somehow managed to record the highest recurve score of the day.
Peter Howland fell just short of the 500 barrier in the Gents Recurve. This may have been due to the fact that he was sharing a boss with Ralf Mitchell who was having a go at the Rhubarb (a Club speciality) and who was locked in a verbal sparring match with Rhys Moore shooting on the next target along. Their banter was quite amusing if a little off putting and Peter could be counted as collateral damage.
Joy Gough had a miss in the second dozen of the Ladies Compound which spoilt an otherwise consistent round.
The only junior shooting at the weekend was Erin Hainge. Erin was well below her usual best but is still getting to grips with using a clicker on her bow. Any change an archer makes to their set-up takes weeks to adjust to, but Erin is almost there.
