Club Report 29th November 2020

Only ten of the usual suspects turned up on Sunday to shoot a Portsmouth 3 spot at part of the Club’s Scratch League but the standard was generally high.

The Gents Compound division saw the return of Dave and Rhys Moore after a break of several weeks. Rhys hit the ground running, leading from start to finish to take an easy victory with a season’s best score. Dave looked to be on to take second place having a 3 point lead over Pete Mumford after three dozen, but fatigue due to his enforced absence begin to take it’s toll. A string of 9’s and an errant 6 put a dent in Dave’s score dropping him to third place just ahead of Colin Moore who finished strongly after a slow start.

Lone Lady Compound Joy Gough found the going heavy. A string of 9’s punctuated by a handful of 10’s in the first half of the shoot was bad enough, but after the break Joy sent two of her arrows into the 7 zone before missing altogether.

Senior Recurves were thin on the ground with only Peter Howland showing up for the Gents Recurve. The lack of competition did Peter no harm and he broke the 500 barrier for the first time despite having a miss in the last dozen.

A blinding headache and a nosebleed kept Barbara Harris out of the morning session, but she recovered enough to shoot in the afternoon. The blinding headache remained, and she couldn’t see out of her right eye, but since Barbara shoots left-handed it didn’t much matter. Her timing was reasonable and the upshot was a season’s best score and the highest Recurve total of the day.

James Hill continued his run of form in the u18’s category, a miss late on being the only blemish on an otherwise decent shoot. Nathan Kinrade and Jacob Brookes went head to head once again the u16 Gents. Nathan had a bad day at the office, a handful of misses taking their toll on his score. Jacob also had a miss in the last dozen but he equalled his pb for the round to take the win by a considerable margin.

There was an additional archer in the form of recent Beginner’s Course graduate Schon Scheepers who attempted the single face Portsmouth for the first time. After a tentative start, Schon settled down and began to show some consistency. He faded slightly towards the end but showed real promise. He needs to complete two more rounds to be given a handicap.
