It was the Juniors’ turn to take centre stage on Sunday as they competed in their Club Championships. The children shot Short Metric rounds appropriate to their age group and for the second week running the weather was kind.
With the age groups being the way they were, there was no direct competition, each of the five juniors who turned up were in a different category but that did not stop them from trying their hardest. Nathan Kinrade put in a solid performance to take the u18 Gents Trophy, while sister Eloise put in one of her best rounds of the season in the u14 Ladies. Newcomer Abbie Griffin made her competition debut in the u16 Ladies and we hope to see more of her on a Sunday going forward. Freddie Stevenson also put in his first appearance at a Junior Champs in the u12 Gents division.
Star of the day was Erin Hainge, who continued to shoot up a storm in the u12 Ladies division as she smashed the Club Record for the Short Metric V by 75 points on her way to the trophy. Well done to everyone and many thanks to the parents who helped out with the scoring.
The adults were also in action both at home and abroad. David and Rhys Moore along with Barbara Harris travelled across to Yorkshire to take part in the Bronte Double 1440 event. In searing heat, the trio shot back to back WA 1440’s against some high class competitors. Barbara took Danny Cowin’s chair with her to give it a change of scenery and was very glad of it as temperatures on the second day of shooting hit 35 degrees in the shade. Of course on an archery field there is no shade so the actual temperature was 39.5. Rhys and Dave shot well over both days with Rhys taking third place overall in the Gents Compound division. Dave had the consolation of getting the 70m distance award. Barbara Harris never seemed to get her head in the game and shot well below her usual level. Perhaps the sun got to her a little as, at one point, she turned up on the shooting line after a toilet break and reached for an arrow only to find that she wasn’t wearing her quiver! As the clock counted down the four minutes the archers have to shoot their six arrows, Barbara had to scamper off the line and back to the tents to retrieve her kit. She did get all six arrows away in the time she had left and provided great amusement for the Judges and her fellow archers. Barbara finished strongly and managed to pick up the distance award for 30m for her efforts.
Back at Greeba, Sarah Kennedy took on a Short Metric, Ralf Mitchell attempted a WA 720. Joy Gough broke 600 in the Ladies Compound 720 and Colin Moore beat Pete Mumford in the Gents Barebow.
