Club Report October 3rd 2021

Archers were eased gently back into the Indoor season at Onchan with a Portsmouth round courtesy of the kind-hearted Records Officer. The round consists of 60 arrows shot on the largest of the Indoor targets – triple face for Compounds and single face for all other bow types.

For once Joy Gough had some competition in the Ladies Compound division as Theresa Graves found her way back to the shooting line after an injury forced her to cut short the Outdoor season. Starting slowly Theresa got better as the shoot went on but she was never in any danger of catching Joy who led comfortably from start to finish.

Cliff Graves added a bit of depth to the Gents Compound division as he lined up against Dave and Rhys Moore and Pete Mumford. Rhys Moore had things all his own way in the Outdoor season and was looking for a similar dominance Indoors. Rhys did indeed succeed in taking the win, but he was pushed uncomfortably close by his father, Dave Moore. Tied on score after the first dozen, Rhys managed to just ease ahead by a point or two. By the halfway stage Dave was just 3 points behind which forced Rhys to maintain focus right to the end. Dropping just 4 points in the fifth dozen Rhys pulled a further 3 points ahead and then firmly set the seal on victory by maxing the final dozen of the shoot. Cliff Graves and Pete Mumford were essentially in a third place shoot off, with the honours going to Pete.

Peter Howland found himself alone in the Gents Recurve division. Starting slowly, Peter improved during the middle of the shoot only to fade again in the final dozen, but he still broke the 500 barrier.

It was good to see both Colin Moore and Chris Crompton back in action in the Gents Barebow alongside Stan Gorry and Pete Mumford who switched disciplines for the afternoon session. It was Chris Crompton’s show all the way, though Pete Mumford did his best to put a spanner in the works, he had to settle for second place. Colin and Stan engaged in a nail-biting fight for third place, with Stan taking the last place on the podium in the final end.

Sisters Lucy-may and Ellyn Hill were the only Juniors to turn up and being in different age groups were not in competition with each other, though Ellyn was probably quite pleased to have out shot her older sibling.
