Club Report 6th June 2021

An even dozen Club members took the opportunity to shoot on what would have been ‘Mad Sunday’ in a normal year. The weather was pleasant enough but the fluffy seeds blowing out of the trees at the far end of the field were hitting the hitting the archers full in the face and made it look like it was snowing. Hay fever sufferers really suffered but even the non-allergic found it trying in the extreme. The round of the day was a single distance metric round: 70m for the Recurves, 50m for the Compounds and age-appropriate distances for the Juniors.

The Outdoor season had begun with a single distance round so Sunday provided a chance to see if any progress was being made. On the whole the results were encouraging. In the Gents Compound Rhys Moore put in a season’s best score to take the win ahead of Pete Mumford, who also produced a season’s best score. Dave Moore was a little below par and had to settle for third place. Cliff Graves, having recently undergone surgery on his hand just wanted to shoot a few arrows to see how it felt.

Joy Gough (Compound) had been unable to complete the round at the beginning of the season, so she was delighted to get through it this time. Better still, she had enough in the tank to continue into the afternoon and shoot a double round. Theresa Graves finished some way behind Joy but having completed her third round she can now be given a handicap.

Barbara Harris’ effort was rather erratic. She notched up three misses as she huffed and puffed her way through the shoot but still managed to post the highest Senior recurve score of the day.

In the Gents Recurve division, Ralf Mitchell added 84 points to his pb but had to settle for third place behind Peter Howland (who was a little down on his best) and James Hill who added a whopping 103 points to his pb to take the win.

It was a straight head to head in the Junior Gents between Jacob Brookes and Nathan Kinrade. The boys were shooting a 122-50 – 72 arrows at 50m but on a large target face. Jacob had never shot the round before so was guaranteed a pb. Jacob was on good form, but Nathan was on fire, adding 57 points to his pb on his way to victory.
