Shooting conditions were near perfect at Greeba on Sunday and several archers took advantage to post personal best scores. A bit soggy under foot due to overnight rain, it was nevertheless several degrees warmer, with none of the biting wind the archers had suffered the week before. The round of the day was a WA 720 which comprises of 72 arrows at a single distance – 70m for Recurve, 50m for Compound. The Juniors shot an equivalent round based on age and gender.
The usual triumvirate of Pete Mumford and Dave and Rhys Moore lined up in the Gents Compound. Obviously suffering from the excesses of the night before, Rhys Moore still managed put in a solid round to take the win. Pete Mumford enjoyed a nice relaxed shoot. A dip in form during the second dozen cost him the chance of posting a new pb for the round but he came within 2 points of it to secure second place. Pete carried on shooting in the afternoon session and added 32 points to his pb for the Double round. Dave Moore had an uncharacteristically erratic shoot, even putting an arrow into the wrong target at one point and had to settle for last place.
Joy Gough started slowly but soon got into her stride to finish within a few points of her pb. Carrying on in to the afternoon session Joy added 38 points to her pb for the Double and was clearly enjoying herself in the Greeba sunshine.
Jane Berry and a sleep deprived, and noticeably cranky, Barbara Harris faced off in the Ladies Recurve. Jane, who was only shooting the round for the second time, enjoyed the calmer conditions and approached the shoot with greater confidence. Although she tired a little towards the end of the shoot Jane added a terrific 97 points to her pb. After lunch she shot the round again and beat her morning’s score by 42 points, altogether a good day. Barbara Harris, who felt the way Rhys Moore looked, put in an uneven round, hitting the x10 with one arrow only to miss with the next. Her final score was better than the previous week’s but still some 60 points down on her best. Barbara’s afternoon score was even less impressive and she has a lot of work to do.
The Gents Recurve provided the largest field of the day with Danny Cowin, Peter Howland, Dave Berry and Toby Young all in action. Danny Cowin, who divided his time between winding up the Records Officer and making a mess of the score sheets, found time to put in another decent score which put him 51 points clear of his nearest rival. His afternoon score was no where near as good but the combined total saw him add 32 points to his pb. Dave Berry had a slow start with a couple of misses early on but hit his stride just before half time. The break did Dave no favours as he put another arrow into the grass when shooting resumed and he finished firmly in second place. Toby Young put in a fantastic effort in what was only his second attempt at the distance adding 131 points to his pb to secure third place. Peter Howland suffered a baptism of fire as he took on the 70m distance for the first time. A host of misses ate into his score and fatigue hit home in the afternoon but he at least posted a benchmark score for both the single and the double round.
The Juniors were also in action with excellent results. Nathan Kinrade added 30 points to his pb for the 122 30m round and Lily Priestnal posted a superb first time score for both the Single and Double 30m round. Tilly Ashton had a relatively poor morning session but improved in the afternoon to post a pb for the Double. Star of the day however, was James Hill who added an astonishing 175 points to his pb for the 122 50m to break the 500 barrier for the first time.
