Numbers were low on Sunday; a combination of half-term holidays and illness meant a lot of the usual faces were missing. Those who did turn up tackled a WA18, with the majority electing to shoot the three-spot version.
The Gents Recurve provided a three-man competition between Danny Cowin, Jonathan Gordon and Chris Addy, with Danny electing to shoot the single face option. Chris had set his bow up with the intention of participating in “run archery” (a type of biathlon using bows instead of guns) come the next Outdoor season. This affected his scoring and dropped him to the bottom of the pile. Danny’s stop/start approach to the season and a general lack of practice meant that he wasn’t in a position to put Jonathan under any pressure. Danny kept all of his arrows on target but had to settle for second place. Jonathan continued his run of excellent form and recorded a pb for the round to take the win in style.
The Gents Compound provided the largest field of the day with five archers vying for the top spot. It was no surprise that Rhys Moore claimed victory but there was heavy skirmishing between the also rans. Andrew (Westy) Westmorland put in a solid round to secure second place, just 13 points behind Rhys. Colin Moore, who had switched back to Compound after a brand-new limb had snapped on his Barebow as drew up for his seventh practice arrow the previous week, was unlucky to have a miss which robbed him of third place. He eventually tied with Les Corrin but by virtue of having more 10’s took fourth place on countback. Pete Mumford slotted into third, which left Les in last place.
Stan Gorry and Peter Howland engaged in a straight head-to-head in the Gents Longbow. Stan was not at his best, but he took the win by a clear 53 points courtesy of some wayward arrows from Peter.
Junior Recurve Emily O’Hara elected to shoot a Portsmouth at which she recorded a personal best score and edges ever closer to the 500 barrier.
