Fourteen archers turned up on Sunday to enjoy sunshine and shooting. The round of the day was a WA 1440 for those with the whole day at their disposal – 3 dozen arrows shot at each of four distances. Conditions were good on the whole, but a stiff breeze broke out just before lunch and ran into the early part of the afternoon which lowered the temperature.
There was a slight change to the line up in the Gents Compound, with Les Corrin taking part in his first full distance Gents 1440 (90/70/50/30m) round alongside usual suspects Rhys Moore and Westy Westmorland. Les Had three misses but still put in an excellent benchmark score to reach 1100. Westy, who has been tweaking his bow and his technique in recent weeks recorded a pb for the round, falling just short of the 1300 barrier. Rhys, of course, took the win.
Richard Hainge was unopposed in the Gents Recurve division. A couple of misses put a bit of a dent in his score, and he ended up at the lower end of the 900’s.
With Charlotte George out of action due to a workplace accident and Barbara Harris stuck at home recovering from double pneumonia, it was left to Erin Hainge to carry the torch in the Ladies 1440 (70/60/50/30m). She did have competition, of a sort, in the shape of David Craine who shot the same distances under the guise of a Metric 1. To say that David was outclassed would be putting it mildly as Erin finished a full 300 points ahead of him, but he enjoyed himself, nevertheless.
It was lovely to see Pete Mumford and Joy Gough putting in their first full day of shooting for the season. Joy had been building up her strength slowly after long lay off due to injury. The pair shot a Metric 2 (60/50/40/30m) and Joy was doing well until the last arrow, when she relaxed just a fraction to early and recorded her only miss of the day. Pete took the honours by some 60 points, which meant Joy would have to do the dishes in the evening as a forfeit; this being their standard wager when shooting against each other.
Peter Howland struggled through a long Metric 1 (70/60m) in the morning session, with most of his arrows ending up in the grass.
Colin Moore had the Barebow division all to himself as he shot a Long Metric 3 (50/40m). Colin kept all his arrows on target, but he was a little down on his usual best and just failed to break 500.
The windy conditions of the early afternoon seems to have caused a problem for the less experienced archers. Tom Rogers tackling a Short Metric (50/30m) notched up 7 misses and was no doubt disappointed with his showing.
Junior Recurves Lula Brown and Emily O’Hara enjoyed a straight head-to-head competition in a Short Metric 2 (40/30m). Lula had only 1 miss compared to Emily’s 4 and took the win by a comfortable margin.
