Fifteen archers took advantage of the excellent conditions at the weekend at Greeba. The round of the day was WA720, 72 arrows at a single distance – 70m for Recurve, 50m Compound. It was not quite warm enough for Rhys Moore to switch to his shorts, for which everyone was grateful; the sunlight reflecting off his pasty calves can be a dazzle hazard.
Richard Hainge finally had some competition in the Gents Recurve, which he may have regretted. Richard put in a fine pb for the round but still found himself in second place, 49 points adrift of an on-form Johnathan Gordon, who also pb’d to take the win. Relative newcomer Tom Rogers just failed to break the 500 barrier to secure third. The battle to not be last in list was won by David Craine after Peter Howland continued his streak of poor showings and needs to go back to basics.
In the Gents Compound Andrew “Westy” Westmorland also achieved a pb for the round but he too had to settle for second behind Rhys Moore who finished 31 points ahead to take victory and continue his unbeaten run. Veteran Pete Mumford secured third place, while Les Corrin, new to Compound, put in a good effort for fourth.
It was a straight head-to-head between Aalin George and Joy Gough in the Ladies Compound division. Aalin, clearly having got to grips with her new bow, was on fine form and had an easy win over Joy who had a couple of misses but is slowly building her way back to full strength after a long lay-off. It is all looking good for the Compound team ahead of the Island Games in Orkney later this year.
Emily O’Hara was the only junior to shoot a 720 round, which she did over a distance of 50m as befits her age group. Erin age elected to shoot a WA900 (50/40/30m) in preparation for the Junior National Championships at Lilleshall later this year. The WA900, also known as “the arrow breaker”, is only shot at the Club once a year but a format change at this year’s National Championships has seen Erin squeezing in a few of them as practice.
Colin Moore joined Stan Gorry in a Long Metric (50/40m) Barebow round. Stan had missed Colin on the shooting line but unfortunately also missed the target quite a few times on Sunday and finished 95 points behind the triumphant Colin who made all his arrows count.
