Club Report 16th March 2025

After a break for the annual coaching weekend, competition resumed at both the Indoor and Outdoor ranges on Sunday. The majority of the Club continued the Indoor season at Onchan with a Portsmouth round, while the small team who are set to travel to the UK in early April, opened their Outdoor campaign at Greeba with a WA 720.

It was wonderful to have Joy Gough back on the shooting line after a lay off of several months due to a joint problem with her draw hand. Joy is still getting up to speed but she at least had the satisfaction of a win at Onchan, if only due to her being the only lady Compound present.

Pete Mumford likewise notched up a win in the Gents Compound as his usual opposition were battling the elements at Greeba.
Richard Hainge easily outdistanced Peter Howland on the 3-spot target in the Gents Recurve to claim victory, while Les Corran got the better of David Craine on the full face version.

Switch disciplines Johnathan Gordon took on Colin Moore and Stan Gorry in the Gents Tradbow. His lack of practice with the Tradbow was evident and the 7 misses he recorded put him out of contention. Stan and Colin continued their friendly rivalry with Colin taking the honours by a small margin. Chris Crompton had the Barebow division all to himself in which he broke the 500 barrier but was a bit below his usual standard.
Erin Hainge was the only junior to tackle the 3-spot Portsmouth and was very much back on form. Anastacia Schnetler meanwhile had an easy win over debutante Emily O’Hara on the single face. Junior Gent Ethan Corran put everything he had learned at the coaching weekend to good effect.

Hot coffee and warm clothing were the order of the day at Greeba meanwhile, as a small cohort endeavoured to ignore the cold, dank conditions to get sight marks for the 720 competition ahead of them next month. Naturally Rhys Moore came first, as usual, with Andrew Westmorland umming and ahhing his way to second place ahead of Dave Moore in third. Aalin George attempted to break in a new bow in the hopes of getting more cast. She remained undecided as to whether she had gained anything from the switch.

After a promising return to form Indoors, Barbara Harris once again found herself in an abyss of mediocrity Outdoors. Chewing through steak wraps and chugging a couple of litres of coffee to ward off hypothermia, Harris ground out the day with very little to show for it at the end. Her score for 72 arrows was roughly the same as she used to be able to routinely post in just 36 and she left the field in a despondent frame of mind. Barbara’s response to Dave Moore’s suggestion that she switch to Compound is unprintable.
