Club Report 16th February 2025

The Records Officer gave the juniors a chance to practice the Portsmouth round they are to shoot ahead of Junior Club Championships on the 23rd of this month. The Compounds had to shoot the 3 spot but the Recurves were given the option of shooting the single face, most chose the smaller triple face.

The best battle of the day was the head-to-head between Colin Moore and Stan Gorry in the Gents Tradbow division. Stan came out of the box like a greyhound, peppering the centre of the single face target. Colin likewise seemed to have found the range immediately and was the first of the two to hit a 10 but then missed with the final arrow of the first end. This handed a 9 point lead to Stan. Colin managed to claw back a couple of points in the next dozen, but Stan pulled away from him again in the third. Both men then recorded the same score for the fourth dozen which meant that Stan had an 11 point lead with 12 arrows to go. Some inspired shooting from Colin saw him cut the deficit to 8 points with 6 to shoot. Stan still looked on for the win but three of his arrows drifted into low scoring zones, while Colin managed to hold his focus to the end, and the result was a dead heat. Both men scored 463 but on countback of 10’s Colin had 10 to Stan’s 7 and the victory was his!

Rhys Moore didn’t seem to feel he was on form on Sunday but still took the win by a clear margin from second placed Steve Brew who was still feeling the after-effects of a recent virus. Andrew (Westy) Westmorland seemed out of sorts in the morning session and had trouble with the peep on his bow. Westy hit a lot of what he termed 9 ½’s but 10’s were thin on the ground and he had to settle for third place. Dave Moore ended up 4 points behind him in fourth with Pete Mumford three points further back in fifth.

Lone lady Compound Aalin George was not up to her usual standard on Sunday and for the first time this season recorded a score that was beaten by all the Gents.

Once again Barbara Harris was the only senior lady Recurver in evidence. She was in a buoyant mood and continued to show an improvement in form but could have done without overhearing a stinging repost from Westy to some nonsense Ralf Mitchell had come out with while she was at full draw. Harris was convulsed with laughter and launched her arrow into the ballistic netting. She was still grinning when she went to retrieve it.

Ralf Mitchell had the Barebow division to himself and put in a decent round that fell just short of the 400 barrier.

The largest field of the day was provided by the Gents Recurves. Johnathan Gordon back in action continued his unbeaten run, with Richard Hainge once more playing second fiddle. Les Corran scooped up third place ahead of Peter Howland in fourth. David Craine secured fifth and Jim Woodall brought up the rear some way off the pace.

Erin Hainge shot up a storm in the u15’s to record a personal best score for the 3-spot round. Ethan Corran also elected to shoot the 3-spot but had a few misses which put a dent in his score. Newcomer Anastacia Schnetler stuck with the larger single face to post her second ever round and needs one more to gain a handicap.
