There was another good turnout at Onchan on Sunday where the round of the day was a WA18
three-spot for all categories except Bare and Tradbow who shot on the larger single face. A few of
the usual suspects were missing but there were plenty there to flex their archery muscles.
With Steve Brew laid low with one of the viruses prevalent on the island Rhys Moore was in no
danger of being put under pressure in the Gents Compound. It was a case of who would manage to
come second? It looked like it might be close between Dave Moore and Westy but after a good start,
Dave just could not find the middle. He managed to hit only four 10’s with his next thirty-six arrows
before recovering slightly with his last twelve, but it was too little, too late and he had to settle for
third place. Westy was consistent but never really caught fire and he seemed rather out of sorts with
his performance. Pete Mumford was more concerned with helping a newcomer survive her first
round and finished well off the pace in fourth.
Lone lady Compound Aalin George shot solidly but was a little below her best.
The normally long shooting list of the Gents Recurve was reduced to just two in the absence of
Johnathan Gordon and David Craine. Les Corran elected to shoot the single face, which left Richard
Hainge and Peter Howland in a straight head-to-head shootout. It turned out to be a very one-sided
affair. Richard took the win with a personal best score that was a clear 160 points ahead of Peter,
who struggled with the exacting nature of the round. The gloss was slightly taken off Richard’s
victory by the discovery that his daughter Erin had not only equalled his score but had beaten him on
countback by hitting more 10’s than he had. Erin was naturally delighted to have not only taken the
family honours but also to have recorded a personal best score for the round, breaking the 500
barrier for the first time into the bargain. Buoyed up by having been more proactive in her shooting
and thus not tired from constantly re-setting, Erin carried on in the afternoon session to shoot a
Portsmouth. Herre she set another pb which equalled her dad’s. Richard was a bit grumpy but very
proud with the result.
Of the senior ladies shooting on Sunday only Barbara Harris attempted the round of the day. An
equipment failure early in the shoot resulted in a miss and thereafter Harris was guilty of a lack of
focus which resulted in a sub-par performance.
Stan Gorry had the Gents Tradbow division to himself and once again his overall form was good
though he was disappointed with a couple of misses which he laid firmly at the door of Ralf Mitchell
who is hard to ignore. Ralf taking on Colin Moore in the Gents Barebow actually showed signs of
concentration from time to time. Although he was in no danger of beating Colin, Ralf left the hall
fully convinced that the Records Officer, with whom he had shared a boss, was impressed by his
level of improvement. The colour of the sky on Ralf’s home world is yet to be confirmed.
Also shooting on Sunday were Catherine Irving-Potter and Ethan Corran who both shot WA18 single
faces, and Tom Rogers and Anastacia Sehnetlei who shot a Porstmouth round.
