Club Report 2nd February 2025

The Sports Hub at Onchan was very nearly at full capacity on Sunday as Club members turned out in force for the Portsmouth that comprised the round of the day. Compounds had to shoot the three-spot target but most of the Recurves, including Junior Erin Hainge, elected to shoot the three-spot too.

The wheels came off Steve Brew’s attempts to take a solo win on Sunday as Rhys Moore re-asserted his dominance in the Gents Compound. Rhys fell only 13 points short of a maximum score and there was clear daylight between him and second placed man Andrew Westmorland. Steve Brew found himself pushed off the podium into fourth, losing out by 1 point to Dave Moore. Pete Mumford finished off the pace in fifth. As he handed his score sheet to the Records Officer Steve cheerful told her to burn it, such was his opinion of his efforts.

Lone Lady Compound Aalin George opened with a perfect end of 60 before slipping too often into the 9 zone. Her last dozen arrows of the morning session were a little tired and put a dent in an otherwise good looking round.

Johnathan Gordon continued his unbeaten run with a convincing victory in the Gents Recurve. Richard Hainge put in a solid round to finish 100 points ahead of third placed Les Corran. Peter Howland put in a much more consistent round than in previous weeks to come fourth, while David Craine had a rather erratic shoot, alternating between good ends and bad ends. This was largely due to over aiming, but this behaviour was knocked on the head by the Records Officer who recommended that he concentrate on his timing rather than the score, or as she put it “just shoot the shot”. Once he did this David’s scores improved, and he finished strongly. Tom Rodgers had to settle for last place.

For someone who only shoots once a week and gave up practising months ago, Barbara Harris made a fairly decent attempt at the Portsmouth three-spot. Her score was slightly undermined when her pressure button came loose which saw two of her arrows swing out into the 6 zone. Still, Barbara was of the opinion that if she could be bothered to put some effort in, she might actually be reasonably good. Junior Erin Hainge shot a pb in the morning session, but this didn’t last long as she went on to break it immediately in the afternoon session. She is obviously enjoying the feel of her new riser, and her scores are only likely to go up.

Colin Moore found himself up against Chris Crompton on the single face Portsmouth of the Gents Barebow division. Colin shot well but Chris was just that little bit better and took the win by a margin of 10 points, breaking the 500 barrier in the process.

Stan Gorry had the Tradbow division all to himself and showed the best form he has had for a couple of seasons. Stan was disappointed with the handful of 6’s that he shot but took heart at his general improvement.
