The heavy snow forecast for the weekend having failed to materialize, shooting resumed on Sunday after the Christmas break with a WA18. The Compounds and more experienced Recurves shot at a three-spot target while the Bare, Tradbow and junior Erin Hainge elected to shoot the single face version. As usual indoors, it was 60 arrows, shot in groups of three. There was a decent turnout, though sadly no senior women Recurves.
In the Gents Compound division Rhys Moore started the new year the way he ended the old one – with a win. Steve Brew snapped at his heels but couldn’t find the centre often enough to exert any real pressure and had to settle for second place. Westy, a little rusty after chasing the sun over Christmas found himself relegated to third, while the young at heart if no where else, Pete Mumford found himself off the podium in fourth.
Johnathan Gordon and Richard Hainge went head-to-head in the Gents Recurve. Johnathan recorded three uncharacteristic misses, but while Richard managed to make all his arrows count, he couldn’t capitalize on Johnathan’s mistakes and lost the match by just 1 point.
Colin Moore had the Gents Barebow division all to himself. His winter break did not seem to have taken the edge off his accuracy as all his arrows found their mark. The same could not be said of Stan Gorry who appeared to be at odds with his Tradbow, recording 11 misses. However, being the only person shooting that discipline he still came away with a win.
Erin Hainge put in a decent round, falling just short of the 500 barrier.
The rest of the archers tackled a Portsmouth round, with Les Corran taking an easy victory in the Gents Recurve over Jim Woodall who was shooting his own equipment for the first time in competition. It is early days for Jim, and he set a decent benchmark on which to build.
Ethan Corran shot unopposed in the Junior Gents Recurve division, putting in a solid round. Hopefully he will put in appearance at this year’s Junior Club Championships on the 23rd of February.
