Club Report 1st December 2024

There was a low turn out on Sunday but some high-quality shooting. The round of the day was the Worcester, shot as part of the Club’s Handicap League. The Recurves shot on the standard single face monochrome target – scoring zones of 5 down to 1, while the Compounds tackled the 5-spot target which has only two scoring zones, 5 and 4. Anything outside of that for them is a miss. Ends are shot in groups of 5 arrows and the maximum score is 300.

Rhys Moore has maxed the round so many times that he finds it boring, so the Records Officer took advantage of his absence to schedule the round so that everyone else could enjoy the experience in peace. Westy (Andrew Westmorland) on an upswing this season, rose to the challenge in the Gents Compound effortlessly maxing the round for the first time to take the scratch win over a lacklustre Pete Mumford and overall victory in the handicap. Peter’s day was not improved by the thumping his beloved Everton received at the hands of Man U that afternoon.

Lone Lady Compound Marie Hainge, in spit of three misses recorded a score that not only took a point off her handicap but also secured her second place overall.

Johnathan Gordon continued to stamp his authority on the Gents Recurve taking the scratch win over Richard Hainge. Richard led over the first five ends, but Johnathan found an extra gear and gradually inched his way ahead. Taking advantage of Richard’s tendency to drift out into the 3 ring, Johnathan managed to turn a 2 point deficit at the beginning into a 6 point margin of victory by the end. Richard had to settle for the consolation of taking third place overall after the handicap had been applied. In scratch terms John Loach came third, Peter Howland fourth, and David Craine finished fifth. John Loach was shooting his third round and can be entered for the next handicap.

A noticeably more relaxed Barbara Harris put in a respectable score to take the scratch win over Caroline Hirst, who needs to record one more round to be given a handicap.

Colin Moore was well on his way to victory over Ralf Mitchell in the Gents Barebow before a niggling shoulder injury forced Colin to stop. It should be noted that with just 26 arrows Colin scored 124 points, while Ralf only manage a score of 140 with all 60 of his. If Colin had managed to shoot just 4 more arrows he would probably have won anyway. Ralf finished dead last after handicapping.

Erin Haine was the only junior in action on Sunday. The newly crowned u15’s Northern Counties champion posted a personal best score for the round and was, once again, the highest scoring female Recurve of the day.
