For once the sun was shining at Greeba, but a constant northerly wind blew into the archers faces all
day and made shooting a chore. The field had dried out enough to allow for full distances to be shot
and the round of the day was supposed to be a full 1440 – 36 arrows at each of four distances. As it
was only three archers stuck it out for the full day, while the rest shot a variety of rounds before
scuttling home to thaw out.
Rhys Moore was the only Gent to attempt the Gents round of 90/70/50/30m. He had no sight marks
for the longest distance, and it took him two dozen arrows to properly find his range which left him
disappointed with his score. Over the remaining three distances he shot solidly but never really
caught fire, probably due to a lack of competition.
Richard Hainge and Barbara Harris were the only other archers to complete a full day’s round
keeping each other company over a Metric 1/Ladies 1440 (same thing – different gender). Harris
struggled with both the cold and her form. Richard added 6 points to his pb for the round and Harris
shot a season’s best, which sounds exciting but still left her some 367 points short of the scores she
was banging in on a weekly basis two years ago. Clearly her mojo has gone walkabout.
Ralf Mitchell once again showed everyone how not to shoot barebow in the company of Stan Gorry
and Colin Moore. The slowness of the morning shoot meant that Colin had to leave before he shot
the last dozen. Even so he beat Ralf by 294 points and lost out to Stan by only 10 points.
Chris Crompton made his Outdoor debut as a compound archer and was given an object lesson in
how to do it properly by Aalin George who played boss buddy with him on a Long Metric 1 (70 &
60m). Chris did well for his first showing, in difficult conditions but Aalin finished 72 points ahead of
him to take the honours.
Recurver Peter Howland also completed a Long Metric 1 but was not very happy with the result.
Erin Hainge abandoned the morning shoot but refreshed on Jaffa cakes and hot chocolate put in a
Long Metric 3 in the afternoon session.
Danny Cowin wandered down in the afternoon to have a bash at a 720 round – 72 arrows at 70m.
He showed flashes of his old form but his response when asked how he had done was unprintable.
