Following the coaching weekend of the previous week, which saw international coaches Clive Jeacock and Tony Drabble make their annual visit to the island, the Records officer gave everyone the chance to show what they had learned by scheduling a Portsmouth three-spot round.
Fourteen archers turned up to goes through their paces, though only twelve of them finished the round. It was an eventful morning, with numerous equipment failures and, at times, a sad lack of line discipline and etiquette. However, some archery did occur, with the usual results.
In the Gents Compound Rhys Moore continued his unbeaten run but the margin of victory was smaller than usual with Chris Crompton, having firmly gone over to the dark side, snapping at his heels. Andrew Westmorland, putting into practice his newly acquired trigger release technique, picked up third place. Colin Moore, taking a break from Barebow, put in a solid round to take fourth just ahead of Dave Moore who’s miss early on pushed him towards the bottom of the leaderboard. Pete Mumford never really got into the swing of things and had to content with last place.
Johnathan Gordon was back on good form, storming to victory over Danny Cowin, who was breaking in new limbs, and Peter Howland who faded badly in the second half of the shoot.
Barbara Harris was lucky that her two opponents dropped out as she put in another dismal display in the Ladies Recurve. The Outdoor season can’t come fast enough.
Stan Gorry, nicely tanned from his recent cruise, had fun with his Barebow on a standard Portsmouth face.
Richard and Erind Hainge elected not to shoot the round of the day, instead they shot on single faces to try and cement the changes to their shooting style picked up at the coaching weekend.
