Club Report 18th February 2024

The Sports Hall at the Onchan Hub was packed out on Sunday morning as everyone rushed to get some practice in ahead of the Club Championships in two weeks’ time. The round of the day was a WA 18, the least loved round of the Indoor season, unless you are Rhys Moore in which case it’s a toss up between the Vegas and the Worcester.

Johnathon Gordon continued his unbroken run in the Gents Recurve division, with Danny Cowin taking second, as he invariably does when he can be bothered to turn up. Danny elected to shoot the much smaller three-spot target; the other Gents stuck to the larger single face. Peter Howland picked up third place, while Richard Hainge, a bit off the pace this week, had to settle for fourth.

Charlotte George annihilated her opposition Barbara Harris in the Ladies Recurve. Barbara started well enough. Her arrows were beautifully grouped, but they were grouping in the wrong place.

In the Gents Compound division Rhys Moore once more reigned supreme, but Andrew Westmorland, complete with new bow, is closing in on him. Westie hit so many 9’s that couldn’t have been closer to a 10 without being one, that he became amusingly exasperated. He was unlucky to have a miss in the fifth dozen when he accidentally lined up on the wrong target, was a 10 but it didn’t count, and the miss saw him lose second place to David Moore. Pete Mumford ended up in fourth.

The Barebow honours were taken by Colin Moore who finished a full 54 points ahead of Chris Crompton who had abandoned his compound bow this week. Stan Gorry finished in third place after a performance that he described as “awful”.

Also shooting on Sunday was Ralf Mitchell who had a go at Club’s speciality round -The Rhubarb at which he did surprisingly well. Bill Callow brought his Tradbow to bare on a Portsmouth. Joy Gough using one of the Club’s recurve bows also had a go at a Portsmouth, as did Lula Brown and Meg Westbury.
