Knowing that he would be safely in Rome watching the Italy v England game in the 6 Nations Tournament, Rhys Moore had more or less ordered the Records Officer to make Sundays round a Worcester (which he loathes). The Worcester is unusual in that the target is black and white, arrows are shot in groups of five and there are only five scoring zones ranging from 5 down to 1. The maximum score is 300.
Turnout was a little lower than in previous weeks and rather uneventful. The Gents Recurve provided the largest field of the day with four entrants: Richard Hainge, Peter Howland, Johnathan Gordon and, the ever crumpled, Danny Cowin. The result was a predictable one, with Johnathan taking the win. Danny was a comfortable second; his form suggesting that his problem is a lack of practice rather than a lack of talent. Richard Hainge slotted into third place with Peter Howland bringing up the rear.
Barbara Harris and Charlotte George had a couple of misses each during their good-natured competition. Harris’ misses were the result of her pulling the arrow up off the pressure button on release – bending it like Beckham across into Charlotte’s target. One of Charlotte’s misses was inexplicable, but the other came as the result of trying to control a sneeze while at full draw!
It was a straight head-to-head in Gents Compound between Pete Mumford and David Moore. It was tight competition. Dave opened up a one point lead over the first ten arrows. Pete pulled level in the next ten. After 30 arrows Dave was ahead by one point again but then had a miss in the next end which put Pete ahead by a single point. Both men shot perfect scores of 50 over the next 10 arrows, but then Dave missed again which ended any hopes of a come back and Pete Mumford took a well deserved win.
Bill Callow found himself unopposed in the Gents Tradbow as Colin Moore chickened out of the Worcester and shot a Portsmouth instead.
Erin Hainge was once again the only Junior to show up.
