Club Report 14th January 2024

Club members came out of the woodwork and the hall was packed on Sunday morning at Onchan. Archers were shoe-horned in three to a boss to face the challenge of the WA18, which formed the round of the day. Three spot for Compound – single face for Recurve/Barebows.

Danny Cowin must have held onto his map because he turned up for the second week in a row and, for the second week in a row, he had to settle for second place behind Johnathon Gordon. Always the bridesmaid…Consistent as ever, Johnathon remains unbeaten in the Gents Recurve this season. Peter Howland managed to overtake Richard Hainge in the last dozen to take third spot. David Craine came fifth.

Another stray lamb returning to the fold was Ralf Mitchell. His presence is always welcome, especially to Stan Gorry as it means he won’t come last in the Barebow. Colin Moore as usual took the honours.

Barbara Harris hit yet another trough in the Ladies Recurve division. Arriving late as she had forgotten where she had parked her car the previous Thursday, she sabotaged herself by putting the limbs on her bow upside down. Barbara got through half of an abysmal shoot before her mistake was pointed out by Pete Mumford, much to the amusement of Danny Cowin. In all honesty her shooting was no better with the limbs in the correct orientation. Barbara capped the day by going down to the boss without the scoreboard and had to do the ‘walk of shame’ to retrieve it. The day couldn’t end fast enough for her. Thankfully Charlotte George was on hand to prove the Club does have some female talent among the Ladies as she put in a season’s best score on the more difficult three spot.

Rhys Moore had it all his own way once again in the Gents Compound. Easily eclipsing the efforts of his dad David who took second place. Pete Mumford shot consistently but just could not find the middle often enough and had to settle for third. Chris Crompton had a slow start which effectively ended his chances before they began. He started and ended in last place.

Aalin George was the only Lady Compound to tackle the round and while she out shot two of her male counterparts, she was no where near at her best.

Still recovering from a broken arm, Erin Hainge elected to shoot a Portsmouth. At the halfway stage she looked set to break her pb before fatigue hit and her scores began to dip. It was still a remarkable effort from the youngster and her determination is commendable.
