The Records Officer was obviously in an uncharacteristically good mood when she produced the
calendar for the Indoor season as Sunday proved to be a nice easy Portsmouth round for everyone.
In a change to the usual format the Records Officer also provided some background music via a
small, but powerful, Bose speaker linked up to her phone. The reaction to this innovation was mixed.
The Chairman threatened bodily violence if any Christmas music cropped up on the playlist. Pete
Mumford announced he was no longer surprised that the Records Officer was depressed if that was
the sort of stuff she listened to. Which is a slur upon a woman whose universally sunny disposition is
well known at the Club. While Rhys Moore showed his age by claiming the music had been too loud,
but only after the round was over and it was too late to do anything about it. The experiment is
unlikely to be repeated.
The Gents Compound proved to be a tense and close-run affair. Rhys Moore who has been used to
landslide victories, was pushed all the way by Andrew Westmorland and Pete Mumford. Only 4
points separated the top three, with Dave Moore in fourth just 5 points behind Pete. Cliff Graves,
shooting in the afternoon session, was a bit off the pace and had to settle for fifth.
After a dismal performance the week before, Joy Gough put in a season’s best score. She had been
beating boss mate Pete Mumford until the half-way stage but faded a little after the break.
Johnathan Gordon continued his unbeaten run in the Gents Recurve, being the only man to break
the 500 barrier. Peter Howland came a comfortable second, and newbie Richard Hainge picked up
third place. David Craine seemed to have a difficult time of it down in fourth.
Lone Lady Recurve Barbara Harris had a slightly better week than she has of late. The fact that she
put the limbs on her bow the right way up this time probably helped, it usually does. Having Freddie
Mercury belting the tunes of her salad days also seemed to have an impact. A slightly iffy start was
soon rectified by her removing a dodgy arrow from the rotation and Barbara finished with the kind
of dozen totals she used to produce on a regular basis.
Chris Crompton took a break from the rigours of Compound shooting and went back to his beloved
Barebow style to produce a good match against Colin Moore. Colin led over the first dozen before
Chris managed to squeeze ahead. There was never more than two points in it until the last dozen
when Chris steamed ahead to take the win by 9 points.
