Club Report 18th June 2023

The sun continued to shine at Greeba but a tricky, gusting wind was also in the mix on Sunday which kept the archers on their toes. The round of the day was a WA 720 – 72 arrows at a single distance: 70m for Recurve, 50m for Compound. Tradbows also shot 50m but had the luxury of a large target face.

James Hill continued his domination of the Gents Recurve though at first it looked as if it would go Danny Cowin’s way. Unfortunately for Danny he lost his way after a strong start and his archery GPS didn’t kick back in until the last two dozen by which time it was too late for anything other than second place. Alex Allen-Snell had a better week finishing strongly enough to put some pressure on Danny. The final dozen especially looked like the Alex of old. Peter Howland came in fourth. Barbara Harris, looking more relaxed and confident with every shoot thought she had broken the 500 barrier at the weekend but, after checking the scorecards in her capacity as Records Officer, found that her boss partner had added the score up incorrectly and that was not the case.

Rhys Moore chalked up another win in the Gents Compound but the story was really about the fight for second place between Pete Mumford and Dave Moore. Pete had a poor start with a miss in the first dozen but things just weren’t flowing for Dave and by the half way stage he was only 4 points ahead of Pete. After the break it was his turn to start missing while Pete remained steady to take second spot on the podium. Joy Gough elected to shoot the 70m distance instead of the Compound 50m as she felt she needed the practice but was not happy with the result as she fell well short of her self-imposed target of 600.

Colin Moore took on Stan Gorry and Ralf Mitchell in the Gents Tradbow, at least he took on Stan Gorry as Ralf appeared to be there only as comic relief – his efforts at archery certainly being laughable. Stan had the better start but couldn’t maintain the standard and Colin romped home to take the win 128 points ahead of Stan and 277 points ahead of Ralf.
